Week 5 Recap I League

So while people continue to whine about ringers, here is what happened in week 5.

Three Stars:

1. Chris Gallagher: Komets: 3 Goals (GWG) Komets 3-2 win
2. Chris Zolle: Blue Devils: 2 Goals (GWG) Blue Devils 3-0 Win
3. Brian Conner: Mayhem: 2 Goals. Mayhem 4-1 win
Honorable Mention: Beverly Schlueter: Komets. 2 Assists. Komets 3-2 win.

Goalie of the week: Nina Bonifaz: Spiders-Plat. 21 Shots faced, 20 Saves. Spiders Plat 3-1 win.

Patriots 4 Borrachos 3 (OT)
Patriots survive a strong Borrachos squad in the extra frame to still control the fourth place playoff spot. Patriots not only faced the line of doom in Stuckeman, Stuckeman and Haley, but also faced the awesome power of mighty warrior Dan Stuckeman. Pats who only had 8 skaters on the night threw their “Holy Trinity of Defense” in Sharma, Hodges and Vaughan at the Borrachos and it proved to be enough…with insane goaltending by Jesse Gonzales, who had his best game of the year thus far, Including a save on a Jim Stuckeman breakaway with one second left in regulation. Borrachos would get one score from Jim Stuckeman while Dan Stuckeman would get the other two for the Borrachos. Patriots wouldn’t be denied as Brian Brookman, Jesse Mares, and John Piccarillo get the regulation goals. In OT, the patriots took full control of Borrachos penalty trouble and cashed in on a Sharma goal for the win. Patriots are not only excited with their win over Mayhem earlier in the season, but also with this huge win to remain the hunt.

Mayhem 4 Stickmen 1
With their loss to the Patriots still on their mind, Mayhem was determined not to lose to the winless Stickmen. Alas, their emotions were still shattered as Mayhem was the first team to surrender a goal to the Stickmen squad…on their first and only shot of the first period. Mayhem wouldn’t score 45 goals as promised by Coach Bobby Sirkis, but they get a healthy four. Brian Conner continues his tear as he maintains the league lead in points with two goals on the night. Also scoring was Ryan “Screaming like a demon from hell” Smith and Trevor “Patrick Stephane” Litchy. Notably, goalie Chris Duran notched an assist on the night. Heck, the dude only faced 7 shots all night, why shouldn’t he get involved with the offense. Mayhem will clash with the Stingers for a shot at control of first place next week. Nickerson vs Pinnard will be the matchup of the century.

Stingers 4 Spiders 3 (SO)
Stingers gain control of first place in the gold division and send the spiders team into the pit of despair. Stingers looked like the better team for most of the night as they never trailed in this one. Stingers were able to get goals from Scott Childress, Greg Carter and Jason “Avawings #1 fan” Isham. Spiders wouldn’t go away as they seemed to always be able to tie the game up as they were able to squeeze by the total eclipse on shots from Chris Gallagher, Andrew Patti, and with under a minute left in the third, from Aaron Manalo. The shootout again would go the Stingers on a John Hardin score that beat Spiders goalie Matt Sexton. Total Eclipse for the stingers was perfect in the shootout. From Josh Briscoe following the game that he did not play in, “Go ahead and crown us, no one will stop me.”

Warriors 3 Ice Holes 1
Warriors still are hanging in their for the 4th and final playoff spot in the Gold Division as they beat up on the hapless Ice Holes. Warriors had a great night from Ken “Doc” Taub who had two goals on the night. Eric Johnson also had a tally for the Warriors while the Holes only strike was from Jared Junker. Rumor has it the Warriors are dressing like pirates these days. Warriors will take on the red hot Patriots on Saturday.

Spiders Silver 3 Leftovers 1
Spiders get back on the winning side as they get the big 3-1 win over the winless leftovers. Nate Hodges had a goal and an assist while Lynn Kresta and Kurt Kresta both score. Goalie Nina Bonifaz was solid on the night 21 of 22. The scene at the crossbar following the game was “interesting”.

Blue Devils 3 Snipers 0
In a rematch of the Silver Keg from last season, the Blue Devils get their revenge as they obliterate the snipers. The Evil Empire got two goals from Chris Zolle and one from a mysterious number 11. The great Mark Cameron had two assists on the night. Dancing Hippo Ray Workman said, “It must be a sin to play and look this good”. Apparently Arm Hair is something that is coveted on the Blue Devils…

Komets 3 Puckers 2
Komets get probably the biggest win in their franchise history and a currently hold the second place behind Diablo Azul. This one started out with the Puckers atop on a Ryan Rintala goal, however it was quickly erased by a Chris Gallagher goal for Los Komets. Puckers would then gain another advantage on a Steve Niekomp goal, again erased by Gallagher on a Beverly Schuler helper. Komets would then get the winner on Gallagher’s third of the night from Nate Hodges and Schuler for the winner. If Gallagher keeps scoring goals, the Komets may have a Keg in their future.

Fugaweez 4 Shockers 1
Fugaweez keep the Shockers winless in a complete domination. A 2-0 Fugs lead was built on goals from Mike Garcia and Damon Lacey before the shockers scored on a Bryan Voskiul goal. Fugaweez would then ice the game with a couple more goals from Mark Gragg and Patrick “Captain Picard” Steward. Before Steward scored he was heard yelling “engage” from blue line.

Further more we broke down the league as a whole to see just how teams sit if we were to erase the divisions….

1.Stingers: Are officially a 2-1 favorite to win the keg this season. The perfect balance of offense, defense, ringers and goaltending. Just what you need to win a championship.

2.Mayhem: Only reason they are ahead of the Spiders is because they haven’t played them. Coach Bobby Sirkis has this team running like a machine, while Brian Conner is the by far the MVP of the League.

3.Spiders: Great Goaltending by Matt Sexton has gotten this team to where they are right now. Offensively they can score when needed, but they haven’t blown a team out this season. Keg dreams are based on what Chris Gallagher does

4.Patriots: Tough losses to the Spiders and Stingers have proved frustrating for the patriots. On Paper, this team should beat any team in the league. Jeff Vaughan is on this team. Enough said.

5.Warriors: The warriors are the pefect cross between a Gold and Silver division team (as are the borrachos) This team can sneak into the upper playoffs if it plays its cards right.

6.Borrachos: Tough losses late in games have cost the borrachos. Compared to last season, this team is miles better though. As stated above, this team is a perfect mix between a silver and gold team. This team should be feared a lot more than it is.

7.Blue Devils: Could hang with about half the gold teams, but at the same time would be decimated if they were to play Mayhem, the Pats or the Stingers. They are defensivly sound and have great scoring options in Zolle and Cameron. They just need a lucky bounce in the Keg game.

8.Ice Holes: Good News: Lowest GAA in the Gold Division. Bad news: Lowest Goals for average in the Gold Division. Reminds us of a certain hockey team from Dallas.

9.Komets: Two Words: Chris Gallagher. Komets have for the most part had great chemistry, but adding Gallagher, Hodges and Atkins brought a new level of skill the Komets can use to win a keg.

10.Puckers: The 5-0 loss to start the season was an abberition. This team can win out the rest of its games, and this team can win the Keg. Luechenhoff should always be feared and Ryan Rintala is having a heck of a season.

11.Stickmen: It has been a rough road for the stickmen following their winning of the keg a couple seasons ago, but they are making steps to being right back in the hunt next season. David Blubaugh at Goalie has kept this team from giving up 90 goals this season as compared to 15.

12.Platinum Spiders: A very small team for the most part in number. But this team has talent where needed. A couple more players and this team can go place. Nina Bonifaz is the most underrated goalie in the league.

13.Brewzers: Not the best start the Bewzers were hoping for, but with Jamil Jabri still at the helm, anything is possible. When you have Jennifer Leonard on your team, you never get a dull moment

14.Fugaweez: The civil war on this team last season really hurt the team. However what is left has rebuilt this squad into a decent little hockey team.

15.Snipers: The loss to the Blue Devils really hurt them. Not to mention that without Jeff Vaughan, this team has a hard time winning games. We will give props to Greg Martinez, someone needs to get this guy in the Gold Division.

16.Shockers: If you want a team that goes out every night, gives it their all, then hits the bar, here you go. The best group of guys to drink with hands down. Boy do they know how to party.

17.Leftovers: They’re trying as best they can. We’ll give them that much. Leftovers need a good healthy dose of ringers. That will solve their problems. But you boys look better by the week.

reminder.....coordinators meeting this thursday, 8pm euless crossbar. Food and Drink is rumored to be provided.

possible solution for the I league problem. Why not sub divide the I league, it already has to divisions. Make the silver division a so called "true I league" that has less games, more practice times, and no championship. Use this league for more individual skating drills, stickhandling and shooting, and positioning. Then you can use the gold league to emphasize some game scenarios, transitional play, and how to win. Keep some practices in this division, but play a few more games. Make this a more competitive league than the silver.

this is just an idea. it is better than 'lets kick people out' or 'lets yell and scream and pout like little kids' or the best one yet 'lets fight people for being better'. if you guys can't figure this out and make this too big of a headache for the staff, i can see them turning this in to a grapevine system of i league, every week throw you sticks in the middle and play drop in style. or better yet (for people that play in higher leagues) get rid of the i league in euless all together and give the ice times to A-D leagues that have been complaining about mid night games during the week!!

The above comment is a good idea.

The Above comment is exactly what BAC, BC, Yockey, and Andresen have been talking about for a while.

It's a good idea but still subjective regarding team level...you'll still have some teams who think they're gold worthy and not, and vice versa. I like the idea of the winner of the silver move to gold, the bottom barrel gold goes to silver. The winner of the gold goes D, the bottom barrel of D drops to gold, ect ect....Move teams to their level based on results.

Anonymous said...

problem with that is the d and c leagues of the world don't have the same start and end times.

Anonymous said...

yes like euro soccer. good idea. one team moves up, one team is relegated

Anonymous said...

that is a good idea , relegation, like european soccer however two things make that idea not ideal. one is that a team may have overhaul and their so called "good players" are not returning for the next season. Two, week to week rosters change. The borrachos for example may end up losing a lot due to the fact that it is the summer and their good players are on vacation or whatever. Therefore if they are relegated to the lower silver division and keep the same roster they will cause mayhem ( no pun intended). Better teams are a fact of life no matter what league you play in. Stop bitching and get better so you can beat up some pour sap of a team.

I would expect a player who shouldn't even be in the I league (Sharma) to take that approach. Why don't you get better and beat some poor sap in the D or C league.

Here is video of the week since B.A.C. slack on such items. LOL but he does keep us going on ringers, beer prices, and one liners!

This is probably too much change to ever implement, but I'd like to see both a purely instructional league and a purely recreational league. That way you could learn how to play hockey well, then go and play it with people who weren't as neurotic about winning as some of us appear to be.

I think that sort of competition is better suited to D+ leagues.

Instructional would be more like an extended clinic-type setting, with scrimmages only to apply what we were learning. Even though this is an instructional league, I didn't learn anything about positioning or strategy during our practices. Maybe it's because I'm a lame-ass girl with no previous athletic endeavors, but just being dropped into games every week doesn't make me feel like I'm improving like I should be. It just seems like a more comprehensive instructional supplement would do some people a lot of good.

But then again, a skate laceration across the face would do some people a lot of good, too.

Not that I would advocate that. Because I wouldn't. :(

You obviously haven't been paying attention.

IF YOU PLAY AGAINST (OR WITH) ISHAM, YOU WILL GET BETTER...

Now, print that out on 3x5 card, put it on your mirror, and read it every day.

Problem solved...

No need to thank me.

Lay off Sharma...

He's a good guy...a teammate of mine.

Come to think of it, he's a teammate of most of us...

Never mind

Blog Alternate Captain said...

Exactly
Lay off sharma.
He's a good guy and a good hockey player.
Not to mention he'll actualy work with you and help you get better, but so many people give him *#*#&#& I dont know why he should even bother wasting his time on most of the sacks in this league.

exactly BAC, he shouldn't waste his time in I league. Nor ours.

Anonymous said...

Jim Stuckeman is the one we should run out before Sharma. 8 goals and ZERO assists. Its all about the excel sheet BAC keeps to that guy.

I'm on the Borrachos and we all complain about how we'll never see the puck.

Hey Stucke - leave the Borrachos, we paid too.

LOL ... nice!

OK. I'm calling BS on the above comment. I'm on the Borrachos and to a man we all appreciate his skill but more importantly his desire to help us guys new to the sport develop our skills and love of the sport. We're a close bunch of guys. I smell a Borracho hater out there trying to stir up some crap.

To "Squeez the sharma"

If you havent noticed...
that Gold division isnt an I league.

so stop wasting your time arguing.

Yeah ... ummm .... wait ... what happened?

I ... uh .... yeah .... does anyone else smell toast?

I've taken the "IF YOU PLAY AGAINST (OR WITH) ISHAM, YOU WILL GET BETTER..." 3x5 card suggestion to heart and taped one to the inside of my helmet's cage.

I just can't figure out how I'm gonna get better when I can't see where I'm going. Maybe it's like osmosis.

After week 4 Rintala for the Puckers had 5 goals and 1 assist. After week 5, he has 2 goals and 5 assists. Did an off ice official take away 3 goals?

Blog Alternate Captain said...

there were some mix ups on the excel sheet.

they will be dealt with
thanks for pointing that out.

Good players make the bad players better. Sharma and Isham and Stuke may be solid D-league players, but that should not mean they can't play down with the rest of us and help to make us better. They make passes most players in the league can't (meaning the other players actually get to "catch" a pass instead of chasing down the puck), they are quick to the puck which helps to compensate for players slow on the back check and they tend to communicate. Personally, I think Isham tends to be a big thug as he's playing, but if you have ever played in a D-league game, you will know why. He is just playing as he would in the d-league game and the exposure for the rest of us is sort of beneficial (sometimes the good medicines taste the worst).

Anonymous said...

I think all this league needs is some hot naked girls standing behind the benches passing out water!!!!!

Anonymous said...

you all realize that the "I" in Ileague stands for "instructional", right? If you no longer need instruction, why don't you move up to d-league?

Anonymous said...

the $600 price tag? the games on Tuesday nights at 11pm? hell I don't know ... that sounds wonderful.

Anonymous said...

has anybody ever thought about player ratings???? everybody knows most everybody else, so a simple rating system takes care of ringers. each team gets so many ringers, so many medium and so many beginners. the league or the rink keeps track of players and regulates who plays where.

Backslider said...

Does Isham play on any of the Silver division teams? 'Cause that would be my only chance to get better! It's just that often I have trouble keeping my head up when I skate, and sometimes I just skate in circles, round and round!! Could this Isham be my savior?

More importantly, do I really want my savior to be some dude getting it from a werewolf?

Anonymous said...

I was pissed last week 'cause I got burned twice by a 36 goal scorer from D League who will go unamed but is often seen playing with BAC on various I league teams.

But then I got over it and realized I just need to work on my game. My problem is trying balance hockey with kids an wife two pets a house and an ever demanding work schedule, On top of that I am getting older than dirt (though not near as old as that fossil Olson). So I've decided to lighten up and just have fun. If I can't carve out the time to hit the ice, I can always practice my shot on the driveway (foam rubber pucks don't dent garage doors). Like someone else said in another post I may suck but I'm having fun. If you lose sight of that then you need take some time off.

"Personally, I think Isham tends to be a big thug as he's playing"

you are correct about higher leagues - much more contact because the other players and the refs expect you to stay on your skates. but i rarely get penalties in i league because i tone it down (haha except when i play hodges or sharma)

skating in circles isnt always such a bad thing. just ask nate hodges.

nate, care to explain? hahahahaha

I dont know what you are talking about sir. Everytime I played against you on the ice, you coughed the puck up faster than a true I leaguer.

congradulations for skating circles around my team....when I was on the bench...sack

Why must we continue with the bitching and moaning?

Jim "Candy" Stuckeman is a great player, but he is also a great teammate and friend...for the
f@%ktard who posted as a Borracho:

you are missing the point of what the Borrachos are about...the collective greatness of the Stuckemans' is more than offset by the sparedom of the special-k newbies that make up a full 1/3 of the Borracho roster.

I am arguably the worst player in the I-league, yet I get as much ice time as anyone on the team. Oh and by the way, if this is about "ringers" shouldn't we be undefeated? I do this because I love the game, I enjoy being part of a team with a great group of guys.

So my suggestion to you is to have your mommy or daddy drive you to a local rink for open hockey...if you look closely you will probably see Jim and many of the less talented Borrachos skating, trying to improve...or better yet, stick to Playstation, that way you can use cheat codes to dominate your opponents. Leave the actual hockey to the less cowardly...
