week 1 recap

First week of I league is in the books. And already there may/will be some changes. We spoke with Knute, and the divisions may be shaken up again to ensure proper competition. The two divisions will be made, but some teams may make the jump over from one division to another….who knows…All we know is Knute said their might be a 6/10 break down, or an 8/8 split…who knows…Our leader said he will make a final judgment after the 2nd week to get a proper look at talent levels of teams…form your own opinion. So we are keeping 16 team standings until 2 divisions are ironed out.

Corrections noted…..

MAYHEM 4 Stickmen 0
The Stickmen came off their Stanley keg win with a hangover as they drop the opener to the recently renamed MAYHEM 4-0. (What’s with the yellow jerseys and Ws still boys?)The Conner Brothers had 3 goals, while new guy Tom Harnitcheck had a strike as well. Goalie Chris Duran looked solid turning aside all FIVE shots…wow. Stickmen = This years Pittsburgh Steelers? You decide. On the Mayhem side…the boys look like a contender.

Patriots 3 Puckers 0
Last time these teams met last season, the Puckers got the best of the Pats. This game, not so much...Butch Hutchinson has a goal and an assist while Nate Hodges lit the lamp twice and added a helper as the Patriots dominated the lucky puckers. The puckers only managed 12 shots on net, 8 of which came in the third period. Patriots Netminder Jesse Gonzales kicked them all aside. Next week the Patriots and MAYHEM clash in an early season thriller.

Blue Devils 6 Borrachos 5 (OT)
Scott Speelman’s goal from Ray “Like a Rock” Workman lifted the Blue Devils to victory in a dramatic comeback fashion. BD was down 4-2 early in the 3rd and roared back to force OT. Borrachos goals from Bill Hoplins while Bill Stuckeman and Bill Turner both scored twice. (Man there are a lot of Bills). Borrachos goalie Jesse Gonzales looked mostly solid through the game, but an apparent injury might have something to do with the three 3rd period goals. The new Borrachos look like a team that can hold their own in the Silver Division, while the Blue Devils looked offensively sound, but yet haven’t had a shutout since Nixon was President. SNAP!

Shockers 3 Leftovers 0
Nate “Little Ball of Hate” Hodges scores twice early off Bob Kardacz assists while Jason Howell tacks on a late 3rd period goal for an impressive Shockers win. Leftovers weren’t without chances, but a couple lucky bounces and the turconian goaltending of Chris Duran proved to be enough. Shockers look like a solid contender in the Silver division, bookies take note.

Komets 3 Snipers 2 (OT)

Komets got the season off to a good start with a nice little win over the Snipers in the extra frame off a Mike Bresnahan goal. The Komets scored early in the first off a Mike Gallagher shot for the early lead. Snipers responded with a Luke Schweinfurth goal and took the lead in the 2nd period when Kyle Largent found the back of the net. Things looked bad for the spunky komets until Gallagher rattled the twine again for the tie. Good game.

Stingers 4 Spiders 2
A good game at a really bad time has the Stingers off to a good start. The Stingers built an early 2-0 lead in the first with two goals from Ronald Widmann. Widmann then pulled the hat trick late for the 3 goal lead (We hear 2 of said goals were shortys....impressive sir!). Spiders tried to make a comeback by getting 2 goals from the always dangerous Chris Gallagher. Stingers iced the game off a Scott Childress goal, while the Great Josh Briscoe and John Hardin were in on the assists. Goalie Dana Fenili looked excellent on the night by kicking aside 20 of 22 shots.

Ice Holes 2 Fugaweez 0
Ice Holes get revenge on last seasons 2-1 loss to the (who the!?) Fugaweez. Steve Junker had a goal and an assist while Andrea Cortinas struck for the ice holes. Fugaweez only got off 8 shots, all kicked aside by Doug Taylor. However Bobby Michadellas gets the “He-man” award for facing 28 shots and only letting a couple in, in the losing cause. Very nice sir. (Side note….both of last season’s keg game teams were shutout….hmmm)

Brewzers 2 Slackers 1
We still don’t know much about the Slackers, but we know they gave the always dangerous brewzers a run for their money. Slackers drew first blood on a Pete “Champion” Clark goal, Warren Parker and Nate Williams with the assists…(What!? Another Nate!?) Brewzers responded in the second period with an unassisted goal from Paul Thurstun for the tie. But it was Dave Rumlon (SP?!?!?!) off a Brian Flackspar assist which gave the Brewzers enough for the win. Looks like a good game transpired here as well.

Phantoms/Mid-Cities in DMN

In case you missed today's story in the paper, you can find it here. Reporter Jeff Mosier featured the Phantoms and Mid-Cities in his story on the growth of hockey in D/FW. Check it out. Photographer Tom Fox took took lots of great pics, which we'll post after we get clearance. One of them is a pic of the Phantoms' Brandon Suits fighting with Mid-Cities' Guy Riggs. It's not clear who won.

Leave a comment if you want an email copy of photos.

Thx to whomever left the correction.
