Stanley Keg preview

The Fugaweez and Ice Holes have been on a collision course since they both took the Stanley Keg in last season’s double-champion format. Here’s what we wrote about their Week 3 match:

Fugaweez 1, Ice Holes 1 (tie): Two undefeated teams -- and co-keg champs last season -- battle to a draw. Scott Dolbee scores for Fugaweez (2-0-1). Glenn Thompson scores for Ice Holes (2-0-1). Shots are 21-12 for Ice Holes. Goalie Bobby Michaelides stops 20 of 21 for Fugaweez. And a clean game to boot. One penalty. Photo above: Tired teams bid farewell ... until playoffs?

Could be another brawl Saturday night. Good luck to both sides.

For Fifth Place: Spyders (5) vs. REDRUM (6), 9 p.m., Gold Rink

Keg Title Set: It's Ice Holes and Fugaweez

Last season, there were Keg champions in two divisions. It was Fugaweez and Ice Holes. This season, there will be just one champ: Fugaweez or Ice Holes.

Fugaweez leapfrogged two teams on the last week of regular play to secure a spot in the title game. These teams battled to a 1-1 tie on Feb. 4. (See Week 3 highlights below)

Fugaweez got to the title with a 1-0 victory over Snipers Saturday night. That was coupled with a last-minute, 5-4 win by Phantoms over the fading Patriots. Both Phantoms and Fugaweez have 10 points, but Fugaweez advance by virtue of 3-1 head-to-head victory in Week 2.

Saturday's results

Phantoms 5, Patriots 4: Scott Alcon gets the winning goal on a Bobby Sirkis assist with 57 seconds left. It's his second goal of the game. The Pats' John Newell had just tied the game 4-4 with his second goal. It's a heartbreaker for Patriots, who finished the season on a three-game slide after sitting in first all year. Phantoms get 17 shots to Patriots' 12. Other scoring for Phantoms: Sirkis ( 2 goals, 1 assist), Corey Howard (1 goal), Jason Neal (2 assists), Robert Sirkis (1 assist). Patriots get goals from Steve Benefield (1) and Jeff Vaughn (1) and assists from Rahul Sharma and Les York. Photo above: Pats' Benefield skates away after Phantoms take 2-0 lead in the first period.

Blue Devils 2, Brewzers 0: Greg Sargent scores two, including an empty-netter late. Eric Hogentogler gets an assist. Goalie Jesse Gonzales makes the lead stand, shutting down Brewzers on 20 shots, including a critical flurry when Devils' Ray Workman was called for obstruction and gave the Brewzers a 5-on-3 advantage in the third. Took me 10 min to figure out how to work you in here, Ray ... ;)

Fugaweez 1, Snipers 0: No details on this one yet, but we saw a bit of the game. Looked like Snipers hung tough with the exception of a rebound goal by Fugaweez's No. 3, "Pops." Way to go, Pops. Love that nickname.

Spyders 2, Stickmen 1: Andy Patti and Alex Atkins score unassisted goals for the Spyders. Ken Halford scores for Stickmen on assists by the Listmans, Glenn and Brian.

REDRUM 2, Ice Holes 2 (tie): Jeff Vaughn's goal with 8:56 left forces an astounding fifth tie of the season for REDRUM, which also got a goal from Lance Kelly (assist: Kurt Moore). Ice Holes get goals from Greg Hunt (assist: Peter Nieft and Greg Durante) and Michael Crook (assist: Joe Picardo.) Ice Holes defense has another strong game, allowing just eight shots. Ice Holes take 24 shots.
