Week 2 Results

OK, they're only six days late. A man cannot live on hockey alone. Here are results from July 22 ...

Brewzers 3, Stickmen 1: Jamil Jabri scored twice, and (we assume) a relative named Nidal had the third goal for Brewzers. Stef Trapp scored for the Stickmen, who were in this game until late. Brewzers broke a 1-1 tie with only 1:28 left.

Spiders 4, Komets 1: Alex Atkins scored thrice for the killer Spiders. Patti Greco got one. For the winless (but spunky and quite numerous; 15 skaters on the bench) Komets, the only goal came from Ray Scott in the second period. They managed just five shots all game on Jeremy Brown.

Phantoms 1, Snipers 0: Cory Howard scored on a Patti Greco assist in the closing seconds to lift the Phantoms over the Snipers in a squeaker. Goalie Jesse Gonzales was perfect on 17 shots for the Phantoms.

Wolverines 4, Stingers 3 (OT): The shorthanded Wolverines (7 skaters) won on Greg Mersberger's third goal at the 3:17 mark of overtime. Mersberger might have had four, we don't know. The scorekeeper gave it to No. 44, but there is no such creature on the roster. Stingers' goals were by Scott Childress, Jason Isham and No. 3 (of whom there is no such creature on the roster). Nice job, scorekeep. This is why we don't keep stats anymore.

Fugaweez 3, Ice Holes 2 (OT): Chuck Dolbee scored on an Eric Johnson assist at 3:54 of overtime to lift (Who the?!?!) Fugaweez. Dolbee also had an assist, and Johnson had Fugaweez's first two goals. Hey guys, share the puck, will ya? Mike Skupien and Steve Junker scored for Ice Holes.

Patriots 2, Blue Devils 1: Antti Sivula got both goals for the Patriots and Jon Ellis stopped 19 of 20 shots. Mike Drago scored unassisted in the third for the BD's.

Puckers 4, REDRUM 3: Brent Lasse scored on a Rob Constantine assist with 4:45 left to send the Lucky Puckers to victory. REDRUM had tied the game less than a minute earlier on a Jason Howell goal. Constantine also scored for the Puckers, along with John Ward and Daniel James (we think). Dan Barr and Carl B. added scores for the Redrummers.

The Case of the Locker Room Thefts

Here's a bit of good news, especially for poor saps who had their wallets, cell phones, etc., stolen by cretins while trying to enjoy a friendly game of hockey ... Police say they caught one of them, and he, my friends, was one of us.

According to accounts in both local newspapers this week (see link below to one of them), Euless police arrested a Colleyville teenager who might have pulled up to 40 thefts at our neighborhood rink since last fall. The kid's name is Paul Anthony Larmon, and he's 17. Remember, he's innocent until proven otherwise; Paul told one newspaper he's innocent. He's charged with 10 theft cases.

Apparently, the case was cracked when Paul's mommy found a bunch of cellphones in his bedroom.

There's only one Larmon who owns property in Colleyville, and he lives in a $300,000 home:

The news reports say Paul is a student at Nolan Catholic School and played on the JV hockey club team -- not even varsity! -- at Colleyville Heritage.

Standings

We've asked, but don't yet know, whether the league breaks into divisions like last season or if we're reverting to the old one-big-division format. For now, we'll go with this. We've also asked whether the Brewzers are indeed playing two games July 29. Obviously not, so stay tuned for a schedule tweak. My guess is the Stickmen (not BZ) play the Patriots that night ...

UPDATE as of WEDNESDAY NIGHT ...
The updated schedule for July 29 reads thusly:
7:15 p.m.: Patriots vs. Puckers
8:30 p.m.: Brewzers vs. Blue Devils
9 p.m.: Phantoms vs. Stingers
9:45 p.m.: Fugaweez vs. Snipers
10:15 p.m.: Stickmen vs. Ice Holes
11 p.m. : Komets vs. REDRUM
11:30 p.m.: Wolverines vs. Spiders

Summer season begins

'Twas a festive opening night, one overtime and one shootout (that we know about). The details ...

Stickmen 2, Fugaweez 0: Ken Halford had a goal and an assist for the Stickmen, and goalie Kenny Koulabooth was perfect on 13 shots. Jesse Henderson also scored. Both goals came late in the second period.

Stingers 7, Komets 6 (OT): A heartbreaking debut for the Komets, who blew a 6-4 lead in the third period and lost it just 1:02 into overtime on John Briscoe's game-winner. Bill Ivey got credit for the assist. Scott Childress had a hat trick for the Stingers, and Ray Scott scored four times for the Komets. Mike Bresnahan added two.

Blue Devils 2, REDRUM 1: Randy Perry scored with 5:19 left to deliver the Blue Devils. Mike Drago got the assist. David Ogle had the other goal for the BD's. Ray Workman followed a day of water volleyball with one hell of a defensive game, saying afterward: "I'm going to throw up." Hey, we just report the facts.

Phantoms 3, Ice Holes 2 (shootout): Cory Howard's shootout goal was the game-winner for the Phantoms. He also had an assist. Greg Hunt had both goals, unassisted, for the Ice Holes. Jason Neal and John Lloyd scored for the Phantoms.

Wolverines 2, Snipers 0: The Wolverines skated shorthanded (eight guys) but still dominated the Snipers. Brian Bradley and Bryan Conner scored, and goalie Chris Duran faced only 12 shots. The Wolverines peppered Patrick Donahue with 34 shots.

Spiders 3, Puckers 1: Andrew Patti had a goal and assist for the Spiders. Brent Lasse tied it 1-1 with a goal at the 10:20 mark of the third. But Alex Atkins gave the Spiders the lead two minutes later before Patti's goal sealed it. Spiders had 37 shots to 14 for the Lucky Puckers.

Patriots 2, Brewzers 1: The score was all we got on this one; no scoresheet available. According to "anonymous" leaving comment here, Patriots goals were by Jeff Eagle and vaunted Finnish import Antti Sivula. Go, Finland!
