Pardon the NEWB... but how does pickup hockey work? Pay to play? Random teams? Anyone coaching? etc. Thanks!

NEWB,

You just show up for pickup. Then, the teams are usually divided up by light/dark jerseys.

There is no coaching and no refs. At times, there may not be enough players and/or goalies to have a competitive game. At other times, there are too many players. Some time slots do have consistently good hockey.

Despite the fact that a majority of hockey players in Euless play at the D and I levels, the lower level players rarely show up for pickup games. Instead, the pickup games consist of uppper level players. Is this due to a lack of confidence with D and I league players ? I really don't know.

Most of the upper level players are cool guys. And, they are more than willing to help you out. However, some of the younger guys can be real jerks.

Just my 2 cents. Give it a shot and don't be afraid to tell people that you are new at pickup.

Yes, come out to pickup. You'll be fine. Contrary to pvs poster's opinion, there are plenty of D-leaguers at those games if you know when to go.

The Friday morning game at Farmers Branch (7 a.m.-8:45 a.m.)has several regular d-level players and the occasional i-leaguer. Same goes for the Sunday morning game in Euless. Yes, there are some better players in these games (a-c level) but they're nice guys and, generally, a little older. Very few kids show up for the early games. As a rule, they welcome the inexperienced player and honor their courage to come out for a game.

The night pickups are an entirely different story, as a rule. Lots of kids in their teens or 20s. The Monday night game in Duncanville is an utter waste of time cuz you normally get about six teenagers who hog the ice.

Whether you can make the mornings or not, I highly recommend playing pickup as a way to improve. You can get so much better just by mimicking the higher-level guys. Many of them will offer friendly tips when you screw up.

So long as they don't hurt me... I'm fragile.
