Summer I league: Week 1

***Important note, since there is no playoff game schedueled this season, Yockey is leaving it up to the coordinators. We can either have the last game of the season scratched and a playoff game replaced, or we can be like European Soccer and have whoever finishes with the best record be the champions. Decide and email Yockey***

So our predictions were blasted to hell with a very upset filled weekend….

3 Stars
1. Junior Lindamood. Leftovers. 2 Assists. Leftovers 3-2 win
2. Andrew Patti. Spiders 1 goal, 1 Assist. Spiders 3-2 OT win
3. Sean Griffin. Leftovers. 1 Goal, 1 Assist. (GWG) Leftovers 3-2 win

Goalie of the Week
Doug Taylor. Ice holes. 21 saves on 21 shots. Shutout. Ice Holes 2-0 win.

Black Widows 1 Brewzers 0
Black Widows (formerly known as the platinum spiders) get off to a nice start to the season with a 1-0 win over the scrappy brewzers squad. Jake Jordan gets the Spiders lone score with 4 seconds left in the first. Goalie Jason Luneaen plays great and stops all 11 shots from the brewzers.

Warriors 3 Snipers 2
Warriors start off with a strong comeback win over a tough snipers squad. Snipers had the early lead with a goal from a Joe Tomme goal from a Jesse Henderson shot. Warriors tied it up in the third on a Travis Lehr goal. The Snipers would then regain the advantage from the great Ken Halford. Warriors then fought like their namesake and tied the game on a Carl Moser unassisted goal. Then with less than three minutes left in the game it would be Craig Newland from Travis Webb (lots of new faces on this team) for the winner. Warriors keeper Bobby Michaelides was the difference in this one as he makes 23 saves on 25 shots.

Ice Holes 2 Patriots 0
We could say something about the Patriots shutout win over Mayhem last season, but we won’t. Ice Holes and Pats battle this one out as it was scoreless through two periods. However the manpower in this one was the difference maker. Patriots were down to 8 skaters on the start of the third and couldn’t hold out against a full Ice Holes’ bench. Greg Durante had the goal on a deflection from the point midway through the third, and with 5 seconds left in the game, the Holes’ got one more from Andrea Cortinez. So much for the Patriots finishing first. Jeff Vaughan felt a disturbance in the force.

Leftovers 3 Blue Devils 2
In the most shocking upset of the night, the Blue Devils take the most unlikely loss of all time. Are the Leftovers that good now??? In an amazing performance, the leftovers got goals from Dan Grimes, Danny Branchflo, and Sean Griffin. Two of said goals were assisted by the great Junior “CaketownLindamood . Blue Devils had a goal from David Ogle and Chris Zolle. Perhaps the absence of Ray Workman and Todd Smith were the reason for the fall of the Evil Empire. Consequently, there was no Blue Devils’ press conference after the game.

Spiders 3 Komets 2
The Spiders proved they still are the real deal with a convincing win over a loaded Komets squad. It is official, the komets have Atkins and Gallagher as their number strikers, not to mention a free agent pick up in Bryan Brookman. Atkins and Gallagher are rumored to still be playing on the spiders part time, so opponents beware. The Spiders drew first blood from an Andrew Patti strike. The game would then be tied on a Bryan “No sleep till” Brookman breakaway goal, in which Brookman’s celebration was dying. Komets actually took the lead on a Chris Gallagher strike midway through the 2nd. In the third, the Spiders would get the equalizer on Kris Nicolletta goal. It would take 30 seconds into OT to humble the komets, as a mysterious Erik scores the winner for a great spiders victory. (Last name for erik would be appricated). If the spiders just won a game without Gallagher and Atkins, what happens when they join back up…who knows…

Stickmen 2 Puckers 1
Great game to watch, as the stickmen hope to reverse their fortunes from last season. Stickmen not only got great goaltending from David Blubaugh as usual, but this time got some offense as well. Brad Brynum gets the first strike off a Damon Flores assist for the 1-0 lead. Stickmen would make it really difficult for any comeback as Joe Tomme again uses his largeness to muscle to the net, this one from Jeff Thomas. Puckers’ then unleashed Ken Luchenhoff for a goal, but not enough as the stickmen win the day. From Jesse Henderson, “We’re back with a vengeance this season, this is our year. Try and stop us.”

"The Spiders proved they still are the real deal with a convincing win... "

An OT win is HARDLY convincing! I predict the KOMETS will wash their hands of this anomaly and move on with a CONVINCING shutout victory against the Warriors. Score? 2-0

Nate, you're good guy and I have a lot of respect for you. But you made a bonehead call, predicting the Leftovers to finish dead last.

We are much improved team with Bobby Sirkis as our coach and a badly needed and huge upgrade in Goaltending with Jon Ellis in net.

I have a lot of convidence the Leftovers will win 4 or more games this season. So Nate, if you feel the Leftovers can't win 4 games this season, then why don't put your hair on the line this season, pal!

I'm ready to get the hedgeclippers out and take you to the Barber Shop!

well, now that the league is undergoing some changes, all the games should be way more exciting.

As for who's going to be crowned victorious at the end of it all, i wouldn't be surprised to see the leftovers in the championship game, solely on their unity.

That's real talk.

Kudos to the Leftovers and the Komets who have always been the underdogs and now are giving the upper boys a run for their money....

Coaching is a huge part of the team and I think both of these teams now have great coaches.

Did bobby sirkis win coach of the year last season?

Anonymous said...

I think it would be an injustice to have the keg determined solely on best record. No playoffs equals no playoff race. All of the teams strive to make it to the top four to have that fleeting chance of playing for all the marbles. And then the intensity picks up in those last two games, lots of people watching upstairs, etc... Anyone else share in this philosophy?

Yeah... we need a Keg. Oh, and props to having the pick-up schedule updated for August already!! Thanks, seriously!

isn't the i-league only 8 games long for the entire season? there's your playoff race right there. about the intensity picking up...thats your fault if you don't take the previous games seriously.

I think, as someone who needs classes, team practices and the like, that by craming playoffs into our already limted schedule, we will be penalizing those teams who currently have 9pm games during that timeframe... those evenings contain after-game camp/classes which would be then made unavailable by the playoffs which could run into the evening. I would rather get what I payed for (Instructional teaching) than have some C and D leaguers showoff in some ego-games.
