Playoff Recap

Another season in the books, great games all around. We saw a back to back championship and a newly crowned champion.

Mayhem 5 Stingers 2
A game that was a lot closer than indicated. A battle of ringers was excellent to watch. Conner brothers and John Pinnard for Mayhem and Josh Briscoe, Roland Widdman, and Jason Isham for the Stingers. Before the game we had a feat never done before in the history of this league. On the singing of the national anthem, the CD broke so score keeper Chris DeBuene led both sides and the filled stands in an “interesting” version of the National Anthem. Anthem Singing Canadians aint got nothing on us.
As for the game, the Stingers drew first blood on Hockey messiah Josh Briscoe’s deflection goal on a Jason Isham wrister for a 1-0 lead. Mayhem then unleashed their line of doom in Chris, Brian Conner and John Pinnard. Pinnard would answer to tie the game late in the first. Head Coach Bobby Sirkis again unleashed his line of terror as Brian Conner finished off a powerful pinnard drive to the net. Stingers kept getting themselves in penalty trouble, resulting in many Mayhem scoring chances. In what was a fitting end for Mayhem on a powerplay goal, Chris Conner scored on a sweet pass from his bro Brian Conner for what would be the eventual winner in this one. With the score 3-1, the Stingers were able to cut the game to one on a Dan Fenili goal on an Islam assist early in the third. As all focus was put against Pinnard, the rest of Mayhem’s squad stepped up as Tommy Long scored to put the dagger in the heart and Greg Mersberger lands the empty net as Mayhem wins back to back titles to close out their tenure at Euless. Both goalies played well, but Duran was the better man in this one, kicking aside 14 of 16 shots, while Total Eclipse faced 26 on the night. From Josh Briscoe was unavailable for comment after the game. Jason “Islam” Isham had few words, but we did get this quote. “Bobby Sirkis has shown me the error in my hockey ways. I pledge myself to his teachings. How could I have been such a fool trying to be a better player?”
From Head Coach Bobby Sirikis’ post game press conference, “I told you I wasn't going to be worried about Islam, and his Jihadist army. Even though islam launched a dirty bomb at the beginning of the game, we didn’t even notice him on the ice. He must have been praying or something. Although we did notice he was taking faceoffs at the and of the game. We couldn't figure that one out, even Allah can't help him win a faceoff. Enough about islam. mayhem pretty much dominated. we knew that we were gonna win. i mean we were still motivated by the patriots 3-0 win over the mayhem in week one. by the way, has anyone heard from that team? Also, anderson cooper, bill o'rielly, and stephan colbert all invited me to be on their shows so i can talk about the mayhem struck a major blow to the jihad.”
Note that Bobby Sirkis new autobiography will be on shelves in bookstores everywhere, “How I destroyed Islam, by myself.” It should be a good read.

Komets 3 Blue Devils 2
An epic matchup as two hated rivalries again collided this time for all the spoils. Blue Devils were in the championship again for the second straight season and hoped to shake their championship demons. In a sight never seen before, the stands were filled with solid orange as a good solid hundred fans arrived dashed in orange shirts, quite a sight. A scoreless first period has both sides going defense to defense with only four shots per side. The second period had the Blue Devils strike first on a Mark Cameron goal from Scott Speelman. The Komets tried to rally, but couldn’t find the net and went into the third period trailing 1-0. The komet’s then unleashed a barrage of goals as Chris Gallagher and Nate Hodges both go on a tear. Gallagher scored on a Nate Hodges wrister from the point to tie the game. A few minutes later, Hodges wrister from Gallagher finds the back of the net to give the Komets a 2-1 advantage. With under two minutes left in the game, Gallagher gets his second goal of the night on a Sean Keir Assist (on what was to be the game winner). The Blue Devils rallied in the last minute as Scott Speelman’s goal cut the Komet’s lead to 3-2. However the Komets held strong on great goaltending from Brent Bryant and would hang on for their first championship in franchise history. From Ray “Dancing Hippo” Workman, “Nate Hodges is a fag.” Harsh words. From the hot Gloria Buell, “It was a too bad me and Bev (Schlueter) couldn’t go at it on the ice, there was just no lotion.” Finally from a dejected Todd Smith, “I was pretty much ineffective tonight, but I blame Workman for his lack of leadership”. One can only wonder why the Blue Devils have never won a keg ever, despite making at least 3 trips to the keg in just over a year. SNAP! Props are given to the komets who went from last place to champions in a little over a year.

Patriots 4 Spiders 3
Patriots get their revenge over an earlier season loss to the Spiders to win third place in the gold division. Steve Benefield scores a nice breakaway goal for an early pats lead. Spiders unleashed Chris Gallagher who evened it up a minute later. Evan Collohan scored to give the Spiders a 2-1 lead. Pats evened it up on a Nate Hodges goal from Brian Brookman. After back and forth play the Spiders again take the lead on another Gallagher goal. Patriots then kicked it into over drive on a Butch Hutchinson goal, while Les York burries the game winner with under four mintues left in the third. Spiders tried to rally late, but Jesse Gonzales holds strong and the Pats get a nice season ending win. Jeff Vaughan was pleased.

Fugaweez 3 Brewzers 2
While all the buzz was about the various championships going on, a great battle for the silver third place occurred. Fugs domintated this one for most of the game getting a goal late in the first from Matt Osbourne for a 1-0 lead. Patrick Steward made it a two goal lead for the fugs on an unassisted goal early in the 2nd. Finally late in the same period, Glenn Englehart’s goal made it 3-0 fugs. In the third though, the Brewzers would make it a game. Ken Thomas scores unassisted in the first minute, while Brian Flashbart’s goal from Brit Broodstromm narrows it to a 3-2 Fugs lead. Brewzers couldn’t finish the comeback as Creighton Bousher stands firm and holds on as the Fugs secure 3rd place, and cap off a very nice season. Fear this team next season.

Ice Holes 1 Stickmen 0
The Ice Holes, ie Euless Dallas Stars, once again play similar Ken Hitchcock defense first hockey. Once again, they were victorious. Ice Holes get their lone goal from Steve “Spartan” Junker on a Jason Junker Assist. The Ice Holes then went in uber defensive mode and stop any offensive attacks sent by the Stickmen. Playing the Ice Holes is a headache for any offensive squad. Fear the Skupiens.

Warriors 6 Borrachos 5 (Shootout)
Not too many ejections in this one, yet there were some fisticuffs in the most hated rivalry in the league. Both Sides went back and forth in scoring. Jim Stuckeman Scored for an early lead for the borrachos, only to be erased 10 seconds later on a Travis Lehr’s goal. Dan Stuckeman and Jim Stuckeman both score again to make it a 3-1 Borrachos Lead. Warriors wouldn’t be denied as they comeback on a Dallas Lehr goal and a Scott “mindo” Dolbee goal to tie the game. Dolbee would then score again only seven seconds later on Travis Lehr’s 2nd assist on the night for a 4-3 Warriors lead. Note its still the first period…Borrachos then have a little comeback of their own as Dan and Jim Stuckeman both score again to give the borrachos a 5-4 lead. The warriors then get a huge tieing goal from Dallas Lehr with five mintues left in the third. After a scorless OT, the shootout had Danny Grimes with the shootout winner to end what was a thrilling game to those watching. Cue Ringer talk….

Snipers 2 Puckers 1 (OT)
In a game that had Michigan and Ohio State working together, the Snipers survive a deadly Puckers squad in the longest I league game in league history. Puckers struck first on a Travis Lehr goal from Ken Luechenhoff. Snipers then battled like Spartan warriors as Jesse Henderson single handedly makes a dead charge through four puckers to muscle one past Casey Jenkins, MIGHTY! Both sides went back and forth with great chances abounding equally. At the same time, Jenkins and Patrick Donaghue played phenomenal as the game continued. The game would then go into the first 11 minute stop time over time, and almost every second was used in this one. With 21 seconds left before the shootout, Greg Martinez scores on vicious one timer from Brandon Armstrong for the winner to a very good game between two equally matched teams. Donaghue stops 21 of 22 shots while Jenkins stops 19 of 21.

Shockers (Dain Bramage) 4 Leftovers 3
The formerly known Shockers now Dain Bramage wins the mini playoff game against the leftovers. Jen Smith, Bryan Conner, Otto Beliess, Nick McMacken, and Ryan Brett score for Drain Bramage. The Leftovers get their three tallies from “AJ”, a mysterious #15 and Mitch Gnatowsky all score the three for the Leftovers. Shockers would then go on to play the Platinum Spiders.

Spiders Platinum 3 Dain Bramage (Shockers) 0

A shorthanded Spiders Plat team finish off a very good season with a shutout win over the Shockers. Evan Callohan, Pete Clark, and Chris Nicolleta score the three goals for the Spiders while Jesse Gonzales throws a shutout against his rival Chris Duran, stopping 19 or 19 shots on the night. Good Game.

We await to hear from Yockey about teams in the Major League and the Minor League.

Pictures to come later (as soon as we get some of mayhems pics)...we have the times for practices, but we'll save those for like say thursday,,,

Nice recap!

Where are the individual player awards like at the end of last season?

ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED!?!?

So Isham had the primary assist on both Stingers goals? Sounds like he was more of a threat than Sirkis is willing to admit.

Congrats to the Mayhem and Komets.

Two quick things, Jennifer Leonard scored the unassisted first goal for the Brewzers and it's kind of hard for Dallas to score against the Borrachos in the third period when he was kicked out in the second.

the komets only won the keg because they had chris gallagher and alex atkins. without them they probably wouldnt have made it that far.

I think they got my number mixed with Eric Johnson's [#26]. I only had a couple of shots on net and Jesse gobbled those up like a fat kid loves cake!!!

I believe the Komets made it to 3rd place last season with out Chris, Alex or Nate. Kudos to the Komets for picking them up. I have also heard that Chris and Alex are both staying with the Komets - maybe because they play like a team.

Don't get me wrong, I can't wait for the Komets to come up to gold and play with the big boys, but I do really enjoy every single person on that team. They really rally together as a team and they have fun; alot of teams should pay attention to that.

Congrats to Chris G for joining the Komets and making them even stronger then what they already were. I am sure he considers himself as part of that team and not an individual.

But Chris and Alex play for the (gold)Spiders...

"the komets only won the keg because they had chris gallagher and alex atkins. without them they probably wouldnt have made it that far."

...takes more than two people to win a hockey game.

Hockeychick? what's your beef with the Komets? Our "ringers" Chris is in the middle of the pack of top scorers. Nate's are with other teams, not ours, and Alex isn't listed. Nate didn't even play with us for 3/4 of season. Stop whinning!!

The Komets Secret: Coaching and Desire!

Anonymous said...

So if Chris and Alex are such ringers and they are the only reason why they Komets made it to the Keg - then why didn't the spiders- gold, make it then too? Since you pointed out that they do play for both teams...

It just goes to show that they obviously are a good fit with the Komets team and they all play as a team. There is no "I" in team.

Komets have fun win or lose. They have a wonderful coach and they each just love to play hockey for the fun of it.

Why all the hating on the Komets - it just doesn't make sense? They go from being the last place team, to 1st. Wouldn't anyone want that?

I believe the Komets are moving up to Gold - lets see how they do then with their so called ringers... I bet they end up in the middle of the rankings and at their final play off game they will still have the stands packed in orange no matter what place they are playing for. What the others don't get, is that as a coach I would love to coach them. They are dedicated and they all motivated each other.

as a guy, i would like to be on that team....they have a hot chick

komets should rename their team to hoy chick

What the hell is a "hoy chick"?

Komets with a K, hot with a y.

Makes sense to me.

Chris Gallagher had 38 goals with the Hitman in the D-League last session. Don't take my word for it, check it out on Pointstreak. So don't give us that crap about him being a middle of the pack scorer. I look forward to facing him this next session. Hes's not a great skater, but he has a wicked deke. Where he goes, so do the Komets. Hopefully, he spends a lot of time on his ass this session!

we stopped him, twice

Most of these comments are both funny and true in their own way.

There are a myriad of reasons why some teams do well, while others struggle... The single most important thing is a common goal supported by the willingness and desire to achieve that goal. The KOMETS had a goal...to have fun.

For that to happen they felt the burning desire to improve as individuals. The goal kept them all on the same path. The Komets enjoy themselves regardless of the score. They are much more intune with the reward of entrainment (fun), rather than that of the Win. If you judge yourself by wins and losses...We know you will have fun when you win, but what will you do when you lose? Unless you are perfect...this is certain to occur.

It is a simple equation:

Desire and willingness to improve + a genuine passion for the game = FUN all the time!

Love the game! Play with passion ....and most of all... HAVE FUN!
