I League: Week 1

First week is in the books. This season is shaping up to be a battle in both divisions as teams are already going at each other…

Three Stars
1. Chris Zolle: Blue Devils- 3 Goals, 1 Assist (4 pts, 1 GWG)
2. Mark Cameron: Blue Devils- 2 Goals, 2 Assists (4 pts)
3. Daniel Barr: Patriots- 2 Goals (2pts, 1GWG)

Honorable Mention: Jim Stukeman: Borrachos- 2 Goals (2 Pts, 1GWG)

Goalie of the week: Jesse Gonzales: Patriots/Borrachos- 2 Shutouts/8-8, 11-11 on saves

Patriots 3 Mayhem 0
The Patriots get their revenge from last season’s losses with a crushing 3-0 over soviet mayhem. The great Daniel “Rick Vaughn” Barr was amazing on the night as he lit the lamp twice, Steve Benefield also added a goal. Patriots played solidly at both ends of the rink and when there was any breakdown at all, Pats netminder Jesse Gonzales shut the door. The Patriots/Mayhem rivalry has now become the biggest in the league. Head Coach Bobby Sirkis still maintains an 8-1-1 record against BAC. Bloody hell….
Jeff Vaughan got an assist. GLORY!

Warriors 3 Stingers 2 (Shootout)
A game shrouded in controversy. At the behest of most of the Stingers team, poor officiating was the cry, as one sided penalties seemed to be called on the stingers late in the game on a random referee change. To make matters worse, much confusion occurred in the shootout on what looked to be stopping of forward progress was allowed to carry on. At the same time, the Warriors protest that the shootout goal from one of the stingers should have been voided because of an equipment violation.
We didn’t see it, we’re just relaying info here.
Scoring wise, the Warriors struck twice late in the first off Travis Lehr goals, however the Stingers would tie it up in the third on goals from Greg Carter and Rick White. In the shootout though it Eric Johnson who had the spin-o-rama shot which beat Total Eclipse. (again, insert controversy comments here) Josh Briscoe had nothing to say after this one.
Props to Total Eclipse to for buying us Drinks at the cross bar. Champion!

Blue Devils 8 Shockers 0
The Ray Workman Prophesy has begun to unfold. Blue devils scored their only needed goal of the night from Chris Zolle, who would go on to later score a hat trick. But the “The Evil Empire” decided to make it a massacre and put in seven more. Young gun Mark Cameron lit the lamp twice, plus had two helpers, Terry Newman scored twice, and Clint Wacker had a goal. The Great Todd Smith had two helpers and there was rejoicing in Espoo, Finland. Can anyone stop this force of darkness?

Brewzers 2 Komets 1
This rematch of last season’s 3rd place silver game was a thriller to the end. Much credit is given to Mike “Roberto Luango” Moore who made some saves he had no business making. Excellent job sir. Brewzers took an early lead on a Paul Thurston goal. The lead was almost extended to 3-0 and 4-0, however Bruce Frankel’s re-signing of Nate Hodges proved to be epic genius as Hodges goes Willie Mitchell Style and swats two away on the goal line. The Komets would rally and throw everything at the Brewzers net. The Capers, Nation, Baldree Line of God had the brunt of the work and finally paid off as they edged a goal with 30 seconds left. But not enough as the Brewzers win the day. Jen Leonard puts the Crappy in Scrappy, as dictated originally by our leader.

Snipers 4 Fugaweez 3 (Shootout)
Another game went to the final leg of play as the GREAT Ken Halford hits the shootout winner to lift Buckeye, er, Snipers Nation into great rejoicing. Snipers had started the game with a goal from David Counke for the 1-0 lead. But the Fugaweez stormed back with a goal from Mark Gragg and a pair of goals from Glenn Englehart for a 3-1 lead. Snipers retaliated with Brandon Armstrong and Greg Martinez scoring to tie it at 3-3. The shootout went fairly long as both sides sent 8 shooters to center ice, before Halford beat Fugs goalie Crieghton Bolisler. Alex “Ice Water in His Veins” Eysermans > Jesse Henderson.

Spiders Platinum 5 Puckers 0
This was absolute domination and a royal thrashing. The Spiders Platinum (does anyone have a shorter name for this team?!?!) throw 47 Shots at goalie Casey Jenkins, remarkable he kicked all but five away. Puckers had a couple opportunites, but no real scoring chances ensued. Mike Reeves scored twice while Nate Hodges, Pete Clark, and Lori Wolf also had goals on the night.

Spiders 1 Ice Holes 0
Very tight game here had the Spiders getting off to a good start with a shutout of the stingy Ice Holes. The always dangerous Chris Gallagher scores early in the first off a Mike Ginard assist. Penalties were pretty even with only one double minor to the Spiders and three minors to the Ice Holes. Spiders take on the dangerous Patriots team next week while the Ice Holes travel to Euless, Tx to take on the Stickmen.

Borrachos 2 Stickmen 0
Borrachos led by Goalie Jesse Gonzales blank the stickmen to win a much needed season opener. Jim Stukeman had both tallies, one of which was a shorthanded goal. The other was assisted by Jason “Hot Blooded” Strother and Sean “Super Ringer Extraordinaire” Haley. Borrachos threw 22 shots on the Stickmen net. Some of the saves made were pure robbery. We would like to congratulate David Blaubaugh for epic robbery on several prime borracho opportunities. Borrachos go up against a hacked off Stingers team next week. Should be good.

This league is such crap......full of ringers. I should have like at least 3 goals and Jim Stuckman should have had another 2 or 3, but that damn ringer goalie was rediculous. He's easily a c or b league goalie. I hope the new regime in Euless takes a look at him. There's no way he should have able to go side to side that way and rob us of goals the way he did. I for one won't stand for it. It's time to do away with these "ringers".

I thought the silver division was supposed to be the lesser skilled division but then you get the "roided up" version of Spiders (Platnum) (of whom more than half also play on the spiders-gold squad) and then there is the Beerflyers - errr - Fugaweez. Meanwhile, the freaking Stars Center can't provide our team with a coach (what the hell!) Can't wait till Blue Line reopens.

Wow, Someone is bitter. This is the way to start off a season. Ringers or No Ringers, it just makes you have to play better. Play against a b player, then bring your A game, play an A leager, then bring your minor game. Its a metal game, and for god sakes, quite the bitchen. Everyone. When will people learn, Ringers are here to stay. Now I am no ringer, far from it and probably one of the lower level players, but just have fun. Find the challange and play.

I beat Hull, Madonno, Gretzky never bitched about a ringer!

damn those ringer officials! i heard they called off a goal on a crease violation call!!! we need to get some i league officials!!!

I must say...good job to the Spiders Platinum (Splatters? Splatinum? Spitenum?) last Saturday. Even though you belt-whipped my team's collective arse, I at least had a great time. Inspired me to work a little harder the next game!

It also inspired me to, um, really want a coach.

The Borrachos have 15 coaches on their team. Perhaps you can snag one......

Someone needs to tell Shaw to Stick to selling hockey tape because he sure as hell can't officiate. 3rd period he drops the puck we take it into the offensive zone. the clock stops and he stops play. once the clock is fixed he wants to drop the puck at center ice again and not in the zone were he stopped play. Everything was cool untill he decided to join the game. I can only hope he is better at selling stars stuff.

VIVA LOS BORRACHOS!!!!

Bitter - Hell yes! Bitter about the rising cost of beer at the Crossbar. $5.75 MGD is a wonderful gesture on the part Miller but F--ing Sonny Bryan's managed to have none on tap. Bitter about teams whose rosters are stacked with multiple sandbaggers (some who play on multiple teams none of which are mine - i.e., the hockey whore). Hey I don't mind playing with or against more skilled players. Just spread the wealth. Bitter about the Stars Center who promises "changes" but continues to give us the same old sh-t. Now that I got that off my chest, I feel like playing some freaking Hockey and it's only Tuesday... DAMN IT!!!!

Did anyone see the new guy on the Stingers? He can skate under all of us. It's like a little Lawn Jockey on skates.

Anonymous said...

Is David with the Stickmen the same David who went to South Grand Prairie High School?

Anonymous said...

Nate, what time is Sockey this week? You got beer in the bag?

Anonymous said...

61 for the Fugs is a manchild. He should have had a hattie by mid game but got jobbed on some lucky saves. Fear the Fugs with that guy around.

Blog Alternate Captain said...

A. stingers skater...is he smaller than myself? I dont think that's possible.

B. Sockey...Heck yea son! Its a new tradition

Unknown said...

What's Sockey?

Anonymous said...

yes, what is this sockey?

Anonymous said...

Sockey is hockey with socks instead of skates...
The games dont last quite as long due to the issue of frostbite...and the fact it takes so long to chase down the puck.
And yes, there are "sockey" ringers

Unknown said...

Sweet! Where do I sign up?

Anonymous said...

Sockey is hockey with a soccer ball. A youth soccer ball at that, about that size of a cantaloupe. You can dribble, bat, kick, anything is ok to move ball and you hit your team mates in the gut with the ball when they don't expect it [sorry Danny Grimes].

Unknown said...

LOL, both games sound great! On the Borrachos we just walk around and hit Sgt. Hulka in the nutz when he's not looking. Just as fun...feel free to join in!

Anonymous said...

Think hockey+hacky sack with a child size soccer ball [the ones about the size of a cantaloupe]. You use any method to keep the ball moving [hands, feet, knees, stick, etc.]. You also get to hit unsupecting teammates in the gut when they walk around the corner!

Those who can't play hockey anymore, coach. Those who can't coach hockey write about it. Those who can't write about hockey drink beer and read blogs...

those who want free dropin's and skate sharpening coach.

Yes, David on the Stickmen is the one from South Grand Prairie High School... ask him about the pink elephant.

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't call myself a ringer since I've only been playing ice hockey for a couple of years and I've only played organized games since this past december. I've also never played higher than D league. I'm quick because I came from inline and I work at it. And yes I went to South, I graduated in 97.

BRAHMAS RETURN TO CENTRAL HOCKEY LEAGUE AT NEW LOCATION, NYTEX SPORTS JOINS OWNERSHIP

(FORT WORTH, Texas) - The Brahmas will return to the Central Hockey League in October 2007 with a new name, a new home and an infusion of local ownership.

The development is a result of an agreement reached between the Brahmas and NYTEX Sports to play at the former Blue Line Ice Complex in North Richland Hills. NYTEX Sports, a family-owned management company based in Texas and New York, finalized a purchase of the facility in late March of this year.

The newly renovated facility, set to open in June, will officially be renamed in the near future. The agreement allows for an immediate return to action for the Brahmas, who will still actively consider long-term arena options for the club.

The Brahmas move to North Richland Hills will include a new team name, to reflect their new home, the team will now be known as the Texas Brahmas. "We are excited to see CHL hockey in North Richland Hills," said Mayor Oscar Trevino. "Our community has embraced hockey in the past and I know all the fans in North Richland Hills and Tarrant County will enthusiastically support this team. The Texas Brahmas will undoubtedly be a source of pride for our community. Everyone involved is committed to making this a first class entertainment venue for hockey fans. I have seen their passion and dedication and I know they will be successful.”

NYTEX Sports, principal partners Dr. Salvatore Trazzera, Frank Trazzera, Knute Anderson and Jim Makens, will also share in the ownership responsibilities of the Brahmas. Stuart Fraser, the Vice Chairman of Cantor Fitzgerald, L.P. and the executive managing director of Cantor Fitzgerald Securities, will retain majority ownership of the team.

Andy Moog, a former National Hockey League goaltender and a current assistant coach with the Dallas Stars, will continue to serve as a minority owner. NYTEX Sports will oversee day-to-day operations of the team. “We are very pleased to welcome the NYTEX Sports group to the Brahmas organization,” Fraser said. “We are confident that their involvement will provide a significant benefit to both our team and area hockey fans.”

The agreement will result in the team beginning its tenth season of play, and sixth in the Central Hockey League, this fall following their one year hiatus. CHL President Brad Treliving is looking forward to having the Brahmas back on the ice. “We welcome the return of the Brahmas to the Central Hockey League for the coming season of play,” Treliving said. “I commend the entire organization on their numerous efforts to date that have made their return possible.”

NYTEX Sports has started renovations on the facility in preparation for the Brahmas’ upcoming season as well as play by a number of youth hockey organizations and recreational skating open to the public general public. The facility will reopen featuring two rinks, one built for spectator viewing to serve as the new Brahmas home.

The new venue will include a minimum of 2300 seats as well as several suites. Sales of 2007-08 season tickets, individual game ticket pricing and seat selection will begin in the near future. Season ticket holders from the Brahmas’ 2005-06 season will be granted priority seat selection.

The Trazzera brothers, both passionate about hockey, are committed to improving the hockey experience for the franchise and facility. “Timing is perfect for the Brahmas and the CHL to return to the community and we expect the facility to serve area hockey fans well,” said Dr. Salvatore Trazzera.

Mike Barack, General Manager of the Brahmas since the summer of 1998, will continue to serve in the same capacity, responsible for day-to-day business operations. NYTEX Sports President Frank Trazzera will oversee facility renovations and the selection of a new head coach and director of hockey operations for the Brahmas.

“We are excited to partner with NYTEX Sports and look forward to an exciting return to the ice in the coming season,” said Barack. “The North Richland Hills location is ideal as we can serve the entire Mid-Cities population in addition to being in close proximity to Brahmas fans throughout the greater Fort Worth area.”

For additional details contact the Brahmas office 817-336-4423.

They are not goons, i think temporary ref #3 gave one player a handfull of penalties at the end of the game. Maybe Nate could clear that up? Was a clean game after all Isham was there to keep 'em in line!

The writing is on the wall looks like Knute Anderson will be named head coach of the new Texas Brahmas!!!!!!

most of the penalty minutes were given during the shootout for unsportsmanlike conduct (first time ive ever seen penalties during a shootout!) many of the stingers thought the play was dead when the warriors player lost control of the puck. i think the ref called it right since the puck maintained forward progress.
